This module gives us the opportunity to demonstrate their ability to undertake advanced research using evidence from secondary as well as primary source material in developing a sustained argument for the purposes of an academic paper.
With approval from our tutor, we can select a topic or issue of personal interest that considers the cultural significance of Graphic Design and its current influential position within society. So I choose the topic about the white space in graphic design. We wrote 4000 word of this academic research, and here i want to show what in this reach about.
White Space in design has been a topic of controversy between designers and the rest ofthe world for years. It is about knowing what information to prioritise, and visualise it with consistent, aligned elements that offer just the right balance.
As the "minimalist" design style became popular, many designers follow this kind of simplified style trend. Nowadays, the use of white space in graphic design can be found in many places and is in many forms. It has become an indispensable part of graphic design. This study focuses on why white space matters to viewers, and how to create designs using white space so that they are more comfortable to the viewers’ eyes. For the purpose of this research, 40 participants between the ages of 18 to 30 were invited to answer 6 survey questions, and qualitative methods were used to obtain data. The result proved that using white space in graphic designs correctly allows the information to be more readable, and easier to understand. The use of white space is not limited to only graphic design. It can also be put into good use in print advertising, where brands are designed and built for existing or newly developed products. This paper also concludes that one can create better graphic designs by using different techniques such as spacing, leading, kerning, balance and emphasis. Keeping designs simple is also an important element.
In conclusion, the study has shed some light about why white space matters in graphic design, and how we can make our designs more readable and easier to understand by usingit properly. Spacing, leading, kerning, balance, emphasis and simplicity are also important elements of design. Although there are many limitations to this research, we still proved that in graphic design, the white space is indeed crucial to the readers. It is also a more effective means of communicating information. It can dramatically improve designers’ work. The result of the research also suggests that we have much more to learn about white space, and should do a more detailed study on positive and negative spacing. This way, we can continue to develop this technique and create better products and designs for our family, our friends, and everyone around us.
